Getting things done doesn’t come easy for me this time of year. For a couple of weeks every spring and fall, the weather makes it difficult for many people to focus on work in the southeastern United States and I can’t claim to be an exception.
The weather in early April here is stunning it’s so good. As if the weather isn’t enough of a distraction, the sports world adds to it. College basketball puts the final coat on its season that began a half year earlier. The Masters usually comes at the end of the week started by baseball’s first pitch. The colors of nature spring (pun intended) to life in April just when I think I can’t stand a minute more of gray. So, leaving work earlier than usual this time of year feels like a tolerable splurge.
I walked out of the office at 6:00 pm Friday. Judging from the parking lot, very few people let work stop them from enjoying another perfect day of weather. I stopped into a pod of cubes near my office. There sat Elizabeth Hines who I had never met before working the phones. I introduced myself to her and we chatted briefly. I told her I was heading out for the weekend looking forward to enjoying the weather. She turned around and went right back to work as if it was February.
Once I got past my guilt for leaving, I was touched by her dedication and commitment. I’m going to encourage her to leave early next Friday.
