We are probably working in the most difficult business environment that we’ll ever work in, which is why pessimists are walking with a bounce in their steps. Like most other businesspeople, I am searching for shining lights amidst economic rubble. I have read more this year about recessionary times than my cumulative lifetime reading on this topic.

As I reflect on some of the harshest business times of the 20th century, my mind moves to the 1930s and the 1970s. There is quite a bit of inspiration from those periods of time. One thing is clear to me – the fulfillment that comes to those who do great things during these times may be higher than any other business success they’ve had.  That motivates me.

But it won’t be simple. The last half of the 20th century saw more money made by more people and businesses than ever before. Times were so good that both good companies and average companies did quite well. Distinguishing between the two types hasn’t always been easy. I believe the first two decades of the 21st century will no longer allow average companies to survive. Only exceptional companies will do well and it gives me great comfort that I work at one of them. It may be hard to see from the inside, but when we speak with outsiders (customers, prospects, investors) we are told Radiant is far and away the best retail and hospitality technology company in the world.

Hewlett-Packard and Motorola were born during The Great Depression. Apple and Microsoft were born during the 1970s. Dreams can be realized at any time. And for those who aspire and succeed during the toughest of times, the feeling of success can be far greater than during times when everybody’s doing it.
